Taste Test: Pub Lunch at Lion Quays Oswestry

The Lion Quays Resort in Oswestry offers a spa, wedding venue, and lakeside views—but how is the food?

After a wonderful walk with my parents along the Canal Langollen, a huge pub dinner was definitely well deserved.

Located just a 10 minute drive from the Pontcyllte Aqueduct in Llangollen, we drove to Lion Quays.

I was familiar with the place after attending a wedding there in December of 2021, however, had not tried the food at the Waterside Restaurant.

We didn’t have a reservation and were glad to find that even though it was a Sunday around 4:30pm there were plenty of tables inside and out.

While the dog Bella joined in, we chose to sit outside which allowed us to enjoy the views of the Oswestry Waterways.

The restaurant has a range of menus including daytime from 11am-5:30pm, evening 5:30pm-9:30pm, dessert menu and Sunday set menu.

As someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy roast dinner unless it’s cooked at home or around Christmas, I was pleased to find that the Sunday menu has a range of options from steaks, calzones, burgers, curries, and fish and chips.

Of course the menu also offered the option of a traditional roast dinner.

I chose to get the slow-cooked steak and beer pie that comes with triple cooked chips, juicy peas and a grilled broth.

The chips were the star of this dish for me because they were perfectly crunchy on the outside while staying tender on the inside.

I enjoyed the pie because the steak was very tender and juicy.

Although the dish was very aesthetically pleasing, it made it very difficult to eat since the puff pastry was particularly flaky and putting the gravy on the chips and pie without a mess was difficult.

The peas and broth were great accompaniments and helped balance the flavors of the dish.

Sitting outside to eat a pancake pan was probably not the best idea for me, however, my dog ​​Bella definitely enjoyed eating any bits that fell on the floor.

Since we were very hungry after the rally, we also chose a few sides to share.

The tapas platter contains crispy tiger prawns, padron peppers and 2 spanish meatballs.

The prawns were very tasty and the padron peppers were cooked perfectly, but I found the meatballs a little chewy.

I would recommend this dish for two people who order because sharing two items among three can be a cause of contention even for the closest of friends.

As a truffle junkie, I can admit that if I saw it on the menu, it was definitely one of my picks.

The truffle and cheese platter was delicious and was full of truffle flavour.

For £5 I feel it was a generous portion and could even be chosen as a main if paired with a starter or other side.

The service in the restaurant was very efficient and prompt and our food was served in a timely manner.

Overall, it was an enjoyable meal with good food and great service which I highly recommend after exploring the Chirk and Llangollen area.
