Temperatures will drop a bit over the weekend, and the weather is rainy, which puts us in the mood for fall soups and stews. Here is a recipe for beef stew shared with the flyer by Margarita Lobo de Coca of Bassett in 2006:

  • 1 pound beef
  • 3 medium carrots, chopped
  • ½ onion
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 yucca, chopped
  • 1 TB sazonador de rez (beef condiment)
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 packet ashot (a Central American spice that gives a distinctive flavor and reddish color to foods)

Place the beef in a saucepan and cover with three inches of water. Simmer over medium heat for 2 1/2 hours or until meat is tender.

Add vegetables and spices and cook for another hour.

Here’s a spicy beef stew recipe from Allen Wilson in 2006:

  • 1 pound beef stew
  • 2 small garlic cloves
  • 4 inch square orange peel
  • ½ cinnamon stick
  • 8 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 8 oz. Red wine
  • Half a pound of chopped onion

Mix all ingredients and cook in a slow cooker 4-6 hours over medium heat. Serve over rice.

Reach Out Apostolic Tabernacle at 225 Brenda Driver, Axton and Heads of State co-host a cruise called “Bridging the Gap Between Church and Community” from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 24. The state’s Hourly and Wages Department was skeptical that Henry County Farmer was not paying adequate wages to help him, so they sent an agent to investigate.

“I need a list of your employees and what you pay them for,” the agent said.

“Okay,” replied the farmer. “There’s my farm hand that’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $300 a week plus room and board for free. The gardener has been here for two years, and I pay her $250 a week plus room and board. Then there’s the half-savvy who works about 14 hours in the Today he does about 90% of the work here. He earns about $10 a week, pays for his room and his own meals, and I buy him a can of beer every Saturday night.”

“This is the guy I want to talk to – half smart,” said the agent.
