If you’re walking around The Plains, and you could use a bite to eat, there’s a popular restaurant you should know about where the only thing full of your plate will be the parking lot!
It is located at 105 N. Plains Rd. The Plains, Gigi’s Country Kitchen specializes in serving traditional comfort food to a longtime clientele, as Jason Johnson describes it as “always friendly and very likable.”
Owner Travis Brand opened the restaurant in 2011. Now, eleven years later, Gigi still serves breakfast, lunch, and brunch every Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to legions of loyal customers.
Courtney Henning has been a waitress at Gigi for four years. She started coming there with her parents when she was younger. I remembered how, “We always came back here because the food was so good.”
One aspect that makes working at Gig so satisfying for Hanning is the sense of camaraderie that she and her co-workers developed. She described how, “There are times when things here can get very chaotic. But, everyone who works here really supports each other and we make everything work.”
She added, “I’ve worked in other restaurants and our kitchens are the most efficient I’ve ever worked in.”
Hanning especially enjoys interacting with GiGi’s frequent customers – many of whom dine there three times a day. She went on to say, “We see a lot of our clients so often they seem to be our best friends. They are just such good people to be around.”
Nelsonville, a Johnson resident, has been a loyal customer of GiGi for five years. What brings him back to the restaurant? He said, “The staff is really great and the food is always great.”
Johnson highly recommends the Great Start breakfast set that includes two eggs of any style served with hash browns or french fries, and a choice of crispy bacon, ham or sausage with a side of toast for $9.49.
A customer who wanted to be known as “Craig” comes all the way from West Virginia to eat at Gigi’s. Since his job requires him to travel a lot, Craig makes it a point to stop at the restaurant when he’s in the area.
What’s Craig’s favorite menu item at Gigi’s? He replied, “Because there are so many good options on the menu, I like to try something different every time I’m here.”
If you enjoy a home-cooked breakfast, Gigi also offers everything from buttermilk pancakes, French toast and monkey bread to signature omelets like Gigi’s signature omelette. A classic omelet stuffed with a mix of ham, green peppers, onions, cheddar jack cheese, and french fries for under $10.
Another popular breakfast choice is the Boss Hog. This includes 2 eggs of any kind, 3 bacon, 1 sausage, hash brown or french fries and a choice of toast or a half order of biscuits and gravy for $10.49.
For the restaurant’s lunch menu, Gigi’s offers a selection of original salads, burgers, and sandwiches that all cost under $12. They also serve soups, side dishes, a variety of pancakes, cakes, and soft drinks.
However, Gigi is locally famous for its daily shows – the most famous being performed every Wednesday. This meal is a popular homemade chicken and noodles that comes with mashed potatoes, corn, and a roll for less than $10.
The inspiration for starting the restaurant was the brand’s beloved grandmother, Sue Craig better known as “Gigi”. He remembers it as a driving force in his life that helped guide him from a rebellious teen into a successful member of the society he is today.
How big is Sue Craig’s heart?
Well, in 2006, Sue was diagnosed with cancer. In response, she created a foundation to raise money to help people in desperate financial situations pay for their treatment.
She was also an active member of the League of Women Voters and was awarded the Claremont County Civic Award in 2007.
When Brand announced his desire to start a local restaurant, his grandmother immediately went to work researching various chains and potential locations.
Sadly, Craig passed away in 2008 before her grandson’s dream came true.
On the Gig’s menu there is a special section dedicated to Sue, with the brand stating: “I couldn’t think of a better way to honor the amazing impact you’ve made in my life and the lives of so many others, and then name the restaurant after.”
Currently, user review site Yelp gives Gigi four and a half stars out of five. One reviewer – Laura H. from Parkersburg, WV – posted “I’ve never seen a kitchen put out food so quickly! The service was great too.”
Share another reviewer – Chris N. From Springfield, Ohio – “If you’re looking for a basic brunch spot, but the foundation is done, hit this place up!”
